MORE players from across the Carrick community are being sought to develop their skills in walking football.

Ayr United Football Academy hold classes in Carrick Academy, Maybole every Monday night and new recruits are being invited to sign up.

Talented young United midfielder Alan Forrest runs the weekly session and organises the teams, referee the games and make everything as fair as possible.

This increasingly popular new version of the beautiful game is aimed at keeping people aged over 50 involved with football due to a lack of mobility or for any other reason, they are not able to play the traditional game.

Though based on association football, the key difference in the rules is that if a player runs then they concede a free-kick to the other side. This restriction, together with a ban on slide tackles, is aimed both at avoiding injuries and allowing physically disadvantaged people to play the sport.

The manner in which the sport is played promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst producing the least stress on the body.

Each week all classes will be organised games of walking football. Numbers per team will depend on the how many players turn up each week.

The sessions run every Monday until April 11, from 6pm until 7pm and anyone aged 50 and upwards can take part.
